The Ruined Church

The Former Temple of Lathander is a collapsed ruin with a single entrance and about a dozen legible gravestones, all dated to the same old year. Beneath it lie a crypt, a cellar, and a sealed mineshaft. A great bell lay in the basement, pinning a priest's body, with a ledger recording 214 souls "given to the mountain." Near the church, people remember more; far from it, they forget.

In Session 11 the party found that the top of the bell tower had been blasted off. The tower was six stories once. Huge blocks lie twenty or thirty feet out, all in one direction, each one dug two or three feet into the ground where it landed, in a line that points up the mountain to the mine about half a mile away. Walking in through the door takes you into the church as it was: whole, warm, and candlelit. The real church is open to the sky in the middle, with splintered, burned pews, moss on the altar steps, a faded gold sun on the far wall with a long line scratched through it, an open and empty reliquary, and beside it a small handprint in dried ash, the size of a child's.
