Mourningfall

The Party

Lavius

Tiefling spellcaster

A tiefling spellcaster with a spear, a book, and a habit of writing everything down in a script no one else can read. He came to Mourningfall searching for answers about his own past, and he is cautious about saying why.

What we know about him

  • His notebook is written in a personal script that looks like Elvish and blends several alphabets. He believes it is too hard for anyone else to decipher. He sketches too, and the picture of Tüül in his crystal was the first proof anyone in town saw.
  • His javelin returns to his hand in a burst of purple light. He casts Mage Armor and Hellish Rebuke and sets skeletons alight, and he once tossed a cursed lantern into a pit with the tip of a spear.
  • He gives the credit away. When Nora thanked him for saving her, he redirected it to Aelion.
  • He argues that whatever is buried under Mourningfall may be the prisoner, not the monster.
  • He has a dream he cannot explain: for thirty years he has been running away from this place, and he cannot remember why. In Session 9 Roger told him, "You were here." A stranger in the tavern raised a cup to him as to an old friend. Lavius does not know the man.
  • According to Roger, he came to Mourningfall seven years ago as the record-keeper of a trade caravan of about two dozen people chasing gold in the mountains. Every trip up the mountain, fewer came back, until he was the last. Roger thinks he remembers one day of every year, the day of the ritual, and that is the day he writes in his book.
  • Nora told him he came running, that he had been running long before, and that to make it bearable he forgot the most. La Maestra suspects the caravan was Zhentarim. Nora would not say, and Lavius searched himself for a tattoo and found none.
  • He has had night terrors every night for about ten years, and never remembers them. He has asked the party to wake him and question him before the dream slips away.
  • In Session 11 Aelion did, and Lavius told it before it slipped: he was running from Mourningfall in the rain, the bell ringing behind him without stopping, and a voice he knew like a friend's reached out of the fog: "You were here. Stop running." He kept running.

In the story so far

He found the trick to the tavern's soup: it works in a wooden bowl and not in a tin one. He was the first to see the great skeletal serpent, and the first to suggest that whatever the bell keeps asleep may be a prisoner rather than a monster. He wants the bell rung again, and he and La Maestra are the ones who disagree about it. In Session 10 he and Aelion finally had that argument too, and after the caravan came out, Aelion told him he would not trust him until he remembers. Torm's protection found nothing evil in him. The next morning Aelion found him in a cold sweat, trying to run. In Session 11 he called the forgetting a tea to keep down the fever, showed Tüül the parish register, and fought the false paladins in the church. He reaches fifth level before the next session.
